A large piece of artwork can transform the look and feel of a room or an entire home. It can ground the occupants in its energy and define the space.
Smaller pieces can capture a person’s attention like a whisper. You have to lean in to get the message. There is an intimacy that requires concentration. A well-placed small piece can surprise and shock just as much as a large piece.
Consider your physical space. If you fall in love with a big piece, you might wrap the rest of your room around it so it fits into the entire feeling of the space. Pull colors from the artwork to connect to the rest of the room. Or allow the piece to stand by itself and keep the rest of the room subdued.
If you find a small piece, consider where it will allow people to get closer and not get lost in other visual clutter. Or, arrange a small piece with other small pieces to build a story of your own. Smaller pieces do well on ledges or shelves or in intimate places like corners and nooks.
Look for pieces by size to curate your own space. And remember, artists are often very open to creating a similar piece at a different size if you request it.
